Whatever Happened To You
Tell me what you think, and I hope you enjoy!
Isabella leaned against Jasper as the two of them sat on the steps of the house overlooking the driveway waiting for Peter to get home. “I hate to admit that I miss him.” Isabella whispered with a smile.
“As annoying as he can be, he does make for good company.” Jasper responded, pulling Isabella closer to him.
Isabella took in a deep breath. “I have this weird feeling in the back of my head, as if something is about to happen.”
“Is it a feeling that something bad is going to happen, or something good?” Jasper questioned, tightening his arms around her as she moved to sit completely on his lap, her head resting on his shoulder as she did so.
“Both.” Isabella whispered quietly. “It’s one of those moments when the good seems to out weigh the bad.” She pressed her head into the crook of his neck taking in his comforting scent. “I…”
Jasper kissed the top of her head, “I know, Elle.”
Isabella sighed in comfort. “Garrett, he has to have a gift, so what would your guess be?”
Jasper smiled at the change of topic. “I would have to assume that Garrett can control fire.”
Isabella looked curiously at Jasper. “Really?”
“Garrett’s always had a very strange fascination with fire, so I would assume his gift would have something to do with that.” Jasper responded with a smile. “That would be my best guest.”
Isabella smiled, “That could be a good guess into what his gift could be.” She rested her head on his shoulder and waited. She closed her eyes and simply relaxed into Jasper. Meeting a new vampire would always be difficult, but Jasper always made things more comfortable and she had no doubt this would be easier for her with him around. ‘’From what I know of him, I think he would have a gift of flight.”
Jasper looked down at her curiously. “What would give you that idea?”
Isabella smiled, “Pete always says that Garrett is quick, and he does a lot of jump moves when he fights, I think that maybe he could have the gift of flight that allows him to enhance his fighting abilities.”
Jasper nodded, she did have a point Garrett was always agile when he fought. “Maybe you’re right, but my gut still says it has something to do with fire.”
“I’m going to prove you wrong, Jay.” Isabella responded with a smile, feeling all her body calm at their distracted talk. She was suddenly so grateful that Jasper knew just how to get her mind off things. Isabella rested her head on Jasper’s shoulder. “Do you know his mate? Has Peter mentioned anything to you? I’ve been trying to get anything out of him, but Peter is really keeping his lips sealed on this subject.”
Jasper turned his head slightly to kiss the top of her head. “The only thing he’s told me is that the guy is a bit shy. He just said to be patient, and he told me to understand that Garrett is very protective of him. Which is understandable since all mates are the same way.”
Isabella nodded, “I would do anything to protect you, Jay.” Isabella smiled, “Have you thought about what it is that Peter needs to tell us? I’m not so sure that it’s going to be any good information.”
“I doubt it’s going to be good, his voice sounded off over the phone.” Jasper replied trying to decide whether he should really be worried or not. “Whatever it is, I’m sure you and I can handle it.”
Isabella nodded, “Peter wouldn’t scare us like this if it weren’t something serious and he wanted us prepared.”
Jasper pulled Isabella closer resting his head on her shoulder. “Whatever it is, we’ll do it together.”
Isabella smiled at the tinder kiss he gave her at the end of his words. She rested her head against him and tried to calm herself, whatever was coming Jasper was right, they could handle it together.
Together they stood when they saw the approaching car in the distance, Isabella held tightly to Jasper’s hand as the car stopped and the realization that she was going to meet new vampires was beginning to sink in. She smiled as Peter exited the car and in an instance, he was embracing her in a tight embrace, “I see you missed me, Pete.”
“Not really.” Peter responded with a grin as he stepped away from his Elysia, he nodded in greeting to Jasper before turning to the car. “This is Garrett and his mate.”
Isabella followed his line of sight and she saw two vampires one taller and older than the other, but the other vampire made Isabella’s mind stop. She released Jasper’s hand and walked forward, trying to confirm that her eyes weren’t tricking her. “Riley…” She breathed in awe as she took in the familiar vampire.
Riley stepped away from Garrett and approached Isabella slowly. “Bella.” He responded holding out his hand to assure his mind that she was real and not just a sick hallucination. To his surprise two arms were wrapped around him in a tight embrace. He let out a sigh of relief and returned the embrace, squeezing the younger vampire as tightly as he could, both vampires trying to express their grief and relief to each other through their embrace.
Garrett walked over to Jasper and gave the blonde vampire a pat on the back as greeting. “Good to see you again, Major. You look better than before, less like a ken doll and more like yourself.”
Jasper smiled and glanced at his mate as she still clung to the other vampire. “I suppose it has to do with the company I’ve been keeping.”
Peter tilted his head slightly before turning to Garrett and Jasper. “We should give them some space, and go discuss a few things.”
Jasper and Garrett both turned to their mates, watching as the two were still clutching at each other. There was no doubt the two vampires needed a moment alone together. “Let’s head out, they’ll be fine.”
Garrett looked at his mate for a moment longer, he was reluctant to leave, but he knew how much Isabella meant to him. How good it must feel for Riley to see her alive again and in person. He nodded before slowly following the two other vampires.
“I’m sorry.” Riley whispered his voice hoarse and broken. “I shouldn’t have left.”
Isabella pulled back from the hug and looked at Riley, she reached forward with one hand cupping his cheek. “I wanted you to leave, I wanted you to go and live a better life, find someone who would love you more than anything. I didn’t want you to stay and die. I didn’t want you to end up like me.”
“If I hadn’t left…” Riley began, his voice cracking once again as he tried to convey what it was, he was feeling.
“You wouldn’t have met your mate, and I know how good it feels to have them.” Isabella responded with a soft smile. “I thought you were dead, Riley.”
“I got out, I kept running until I was close to dying of thirst and Garrett found me.” Riley responded with a small smile. “He brought me back to sanity.”
Isabella smiled thinking of Jasper, “I know the feeling.”
Jasper sat across from Peter and Garrett, “What’s the bad news?”
Peter turned to Garrett taking in the look of worry on his friend’s face. “Your mate, killed Maria’s entire army…”
Jasper sat back noting the wave of worry both vampires were feeling. “I know that. Why are you bringing this up now?”
“Because without Maria and her army, there is no power to rival the Volturi.” Garrett replied with a frown. “Sources state they’ve already taken over a handful of countries and the next on their list for world domination is here. Unless someone fights back the Volturi will bring back the dark ages and rule the world, we’ll all be their puppets.”
“No one has had the guts to stand against them, but…” Peter trailed off looking expectantly at Jasper.
“You want me to lead an army?” Jasper questioned surprised at what his closest friend was implying.
“With you and Elysia, we have a chance to put a stop to this.” Peter replied sincerely. “I know it will be difficult, but if we do nothing we will be forced to die or serve the Volturi.”
Jasper shook his head. “I can’t say I’ll fight, I have to think about Isabella.” Jasper stood, “I’m going to take a walk and think things over.”
Jasper left the room and headed into the backyard, his mind was racing with the possibilities of what could happen. Peter and Garrett had been right, if they do nothing, they would either be forced to serve the Volturi or die. Jasper didn’t want to have to put Isabella in a position for her to be surrounded by other vampires and with the fear of an impending battle.
Jasper wasn’t sure how long he had been outside, but when he heard the thunder crackle above, he knew that Isabella had discovered what the Volturi were planning. He paused his walking and waited for Isabella to find him. “Do you know what you want to do?” He questioned when she approached him.
“I started this.” Isabella replied solemnly. “I have to be there to end it.”
Jasper turned to look at her, her guard was down so he knew the overwhelming guilt she was feeling. “It isn’t your fault.”
Isabella smiled, “I know you truly believe that, but it is, Jay. I destroyed her army and now I have to do the same with the Volturi.”
Jasper sighed. “I’ll continue to argue that it isn’t your fault, but if you want to do this I’ll stand by your side.”
Isabella shook her head. “I can’t ask you to do that. Why would I ask you to relive a dark time of your existence?”
Jasper rolled his eyes. “I’ll always be by your side, so if you’re going to go against the Volturi I’m going to be right beside you.”
Isabella nodded and approached Jasper, her arms moving to wrap around his waist and hold him tightly. “Thank you, Jay.”
Jasper held her just as tightly, he could feel the love she had for him wash through him in waves. “I love you, Isabella.”
Together they stood in the dark for what felt like hours, both comforted by the other. “You were right, by the way.” Isabella whispered.
“About what?” Jasper questioned curiously.
“Garrett’s gift.” Isabella replied.
Jasper chuckled. “He’s going to burn the house down.”
